Individual Leadership

United Way of Siouxland recognizes the profound effect that leadership giving has on our community.  To thank those who invest in making our community a better place for all to live and work, we recognize gifts at the following levels:

Alexis de Tocqueville Society

National recognition by United Way of America is given to philanthropists who pledge a gift at an exceptional level. The society has ten nationally recognized levels for personal or family gifts ranging from $10,000 to over $1 million.

These individuals are recognized as community investors who support Siouxland's quality of life. Their pledge helps to ensure the continuation of health and human services needs, all year long.

The society is named for the French aristocrat who wrote in the 1830's of his admiration for the American spirit of goodwill, a concept he found uniquely American.

NEW in 2007 Tocqueville Step Up Program

United Way of Siouxland is now offering the opportunity to Step-Up to the Alexis de Tocqueville Society level of giving. This society nationally recognizes leaders making a positive change in their communities.

How the program works: Donors contribute a minimum of $5,000 the first year, then increase their pledge by $2,500 each year until their annual gift totals $10,000, the minimum to qualify for Tocqueville membership.

Benefits to the donor: For Stepping-Up to this challenge and promising to work towards membership, you will be recognized nationally at the Tocqueville level.

Below are the two forms you need to Step-Up to the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

A.S. Garretson Society

During the late 1880's, a period of dynamic economic and community growth for Siouxland, Arthur Samuelson Garretson stood tall as a leader of a region poised for the 20th Century. In tribute to his spirit of enterprise, community development, and concern for Siouxland's future, United Way of Siouxland has named their philanthropic society in his honor.

An individual gift (or joint with a spouse) of $1,000 or more is given by those individuals who believe that leading by example will inspire their friends, peers, and associates to also step forward and make a difference in the lives of Siouxland residents.

According to the level of their gift, individuals will be recognized by key community roles that are necessary for the building of a sturdy foundation, upon which a healthy and thriving community can be created.

AS Garretson Levels

Community Founder $5,000—$9,999
Community Investor $4,000—$4,999
 Community Developer $3,000—$3,999
  Community Builder $2,500—$2,999
Community Enhancer $2,000—$2,499

 Community Patron $1,000—$1,499

Caring Society

United Way of Siouxland recognizes leadership gifts of $500 - $999 as part of its Caring Society (formerly Loyal Givers) leadership group. These gifts, whether they be individual or combined with a spouse, represent a strong foundation for the annual campaign. Members of this group have proven their commitment to our community, and understand that United Way of Siouxland is driven by a commitment to making a real difference.

With a reputation for focusing on results, contributions that donors and volunteers give to United Way are recognized as investments in our community. Many Caring Society members work towards becoming members of the A.S. Garretson Society as their gift reaches $1,000 or more.
