United Way of Siouxland - Change doesn't happen alone.

United Way of Siouxland Improves Lives by Uniting the Caring Power of Our Community

As a leader in solving community problems, United Way partners with hundreds of local organizations and thousands of community members to make positive change happen.  We fight for the Health, Education and Financial Stability of every person in our community.

The United Way of Siouxland Endowment provides leverage for advancing our mission and helps us advance the coming good - and an opportunity to make a lasting impact for generations to come.  Many people consider making some type of planned gift to a charity.  Providing for the future, is a way to demonstrate your commitment to a better life for all.

Why choose United Way of Siouxland?

The needs of our community are ever-changing and accountability is important. United Way's role in Siouxland has been and will continue to be critical to bringing people, organizations, nonprofits, government entities and every-day difference makers together to solve new issues to improve lives. The unique role that we play allows your endowment gift to perpetually adjust to the needs in Siouxland. This collaborative way of solving problems increases efficiencies and reduces duplication of services.

United Way's Community Impact process is one of the most successful models within our network. We utilize community volunteers who are also donors, just like you, to evaluate each program application to ensure that:

  • Each organization is fiscally responsible.
    • United Way's first stop in reviewing grant applications is our Finance Team. These volunteers review the review budget, audit, 990 and more of every nonprofit organization that requests funds.  This ensures that every dollar is invested in organizations held to the highest standards for accountability.
  • Programs that receive funding are achieving tangible, measurable results.
    • Our Community Impact Team volunteers review each program for overall effectiveness. Goals are set and outcome measurements are tracked  to ensure that efforts are leading to long-term results.
  • United Way works collaboratively year-round to solve problems.
    • United Way and our partners, recognize that we are all stronger when we work together. We are involved with local initiatives which bring people together to solve issues. We regularly review the needs of our community through a local data tracking initiative Source for Siouxland.  By tracking the actual needs of our community we can invest our time, dollars and energy more wisely and make a bigger impact on the root causes of the issues.

Why donate to the endowment fund?

Donations to the United Way of Siouxland endowment fund will continue to aid Siouxlanders far into the future and give us the ability to address community needs.  By donating to our endowment fund your gift can last forever!

How can my donation last forever?

An endowment is a fund that is invested in order to produce annual income.  A portion of the annual income is used to support local programs, but the remaining income, and all of the original principal, will remain invested and continue to earn for the coming years.  Inflation rates are factored in so that your original gift does not lose buying power over the years.

For example, $100 can provide 36 books for the United Way of Siouxland funded initiative the Imagination Library.  Your donation of $2500 to the endowment fund would be able to provide 36 books to the Imagination Library next year, and the year after that, and the year after that, and so on and so on, making your gift last forever.

To sustain a yearly gift of $100 you would need to donate $2500, one time, to the endowment fund:

How can I give to the Endowment?

How can I give to the Endowment?

United Way accepts gifts of cash at any time. If you wish to make a gift, you may do so now or at any point in the future. Please complete our membership form and include it with your contribution to ensure we recognize and thank you appropriately.

Most planned gifts come in the form of bequests in a will or trust.  If you wish to make a gift to United Way of Siouxland’s endowment fund but you do not know how much you need to retain for your own needs, a simple provision in your will or trust can enable you to make a significant contribution after you are gone that would  not be possible during your lifetime.

You can use this sample bequest language in your will or trust:

I give, devise and bequeath to United Way of Siouxland, Inc., 701 Steuben Street, Sioux City, IA 51101, Tax ID number: 42-0680395, the sum of $____________ /or ___ % of my estate/or the following specific asset ____________________________

for the benefit of United Way of Siouxland and its general purposes

/or to be added to its endowment.

To help ease the process of making or updating your will, the United Way has partnered with FreeWill.com.  This tool is free to use even if you do not choose to leave a gift to the United Way and it is a quick and intuitive way to write your will.

For more information about how to give to the United Way of Siouxland endowment fund please contact Heather Hennings at HHennings@unitedwaysiouxland.com.

Life insurance is a way to provide for the loved ones you leave behind, but it can also be a powerful charitable tool to ensure United Way of Siouxland continues its mission. By naming United Way of Siouxland as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, you are able to leave a lasting legacy without depleting your cash and other assets while you still need them.

For more information about the United Way of Siouxland endowment fund please contact Heather Hennings at HHennings@unitedwaysiouxland.com.

Donations of property to United Way can help avoid the taxes you would pay if you sold the property and donated the proceeds.  You save taxes and United Way ends up with a larger donation.

For more information please contact Heather Hennings at HHennings@unitedwaysiouxland.com.

By making a gift or stocks or bonds to United Way you may be able to avoid paying the capital gains tax that would be associated if you sold those assets.  Because of the capital gains tax treatment, stocks and bonds can provide a greater tax benefit than a gift of cash in an equivalent value.  You may also receive a charitable income tax deduction when you make a gift of securities.

For more information please contact Heather Hennings at HHennings@unitedwaysiouxland.com.

An honorary gift is a charitable gift made in honor of a special person.  For more information on how to make a special gift to honor someone special please contact Heather Hennings at HHennings@unitedwaysiouxland.com.

Retirement plan assets offer significant tax benefits to the United Way of Siouxland when you name United Way of Siouxland as the beneficiary of your retirement plan.

How can I take advantage of the State of Iowa tax credit?

The Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program offers you generous tax incentives to make it easier to give more for less. By giving to a permanently endowed fund at a qualified community foundation or affiliate organization, you are eligible to receive 25% tax credits for their gifts. Community members who give also are able to take advantage of the federal tax deductions along with the Endow Iowa tax credits.

United Way of Siouxland holds a qualifying endowment fund with the Siouxland Community Foundation.  To make a gift that qualifies for the Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program, you may make a direct contribution to the Siouxland Community Foundation and request that it be placed in United Way of Siouxland's Permanent Endowment Fund.
