Iowa Reading Corps

Iowa Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to help ensure that all Iowa students are on track to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. The program places AmeriCorps members, trained as Elementary Literacy Tutors, at sites across Iowa to implement prescribed literacy interventions for students who are just below proficiency in reading. The program launched in the fall of 2013 and during the 2016-17 school year there were 7 tutors placed in 6 Sioux City schools.

Each day, the Literacy Tutor meets individually with students to conduct 20-minute tutoring sessions that focus upon building students' skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency. The goal of the program is to make Siouxland children proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade. Studies show that when children are reading proficiently by this age they are four times more likely to graduate. Read more about Iowa Reading Corps here
